The Salvation Army of Alpena County is asking residents to donate winter clothing as it prepares for what it expects will be increased demand from families facing financial pressure. The annual “Share The Warmth” collection provides winter wear to people across Alpena County.
The organization is accepting new or clean, gently used coats, gloves, scarves, hats, boots and snow pants in all sizes. Donations can be brought Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to The Salvation Army office at 722 N. 2nd Ave. in Alpena. A brown bin outside the office is available for donations made after hours.
Why the collection matters
The Salvation Army said winter clothing can become difficult for households to afford when budgets are already committed to necessities. The group’s local effort is intended to help children and adults stay protected during Alpena’s cold weather, including youth who play outdoors and adults who walk to work.
“There are always cold weather concerns in Michigan. With youth playing outside or adults walking to work, it is important that they are dressed warm and safe. We try to supply what people need and help them with the high cost these items can be with a tight budget.”
Major Prezza Morrison said the need for winter wear is expected to increase this year because of financial concerns. The Salvation Army has run the coat effort for many years and says it has distributed thousands of winter outerwear items during that time.
Last year’s distribution and ways to help
Last year, the organization served more than 250 people and distributed more than 700 items. This year’s collection is intended to help the Salvation Army respond to the anticipated increase in requests from Alpena County families.
Residents who prefer to give money can donate by mail or in person at The Salvation Army Corps Community Center, 722 N. Second Ave., Alpena, MI 49707. Online donations are accepted at salmich.org/alpena.
