Women in Alpena will have an evening opportunity to schedule a breast cancer screening this fall when MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena hosts a special mammogram event on Thursday, Oct. 15.
The screening is part of a series of October events planned by MyMichigan Health, which describes itself as the region’s leading breast health provider. The Alpena event will run from 5 to 7 p.m. and will include extended mammogram hours and special giveaways.
How to schedule a mammogram in Alpena
Appointments are required. People interested in scheduling a mammogram can call the MyMichigan Access Center, also known as MAC, at (989) 633-5252.
A provider’s order is needed for the screening, and insurance will be billed for the mammogram, according to information released by MyMichigan Health. The health system said people seeking more information about its comprehensive breast health program can visit mymichigan.org/breast.
Why MyMichigan emphasizes annual screening
MyMichigan Health recommends that women begin receiving annual mammograms at age 40. Heather Fennell, a fellowship-trained breast surgeon with MyMichigan Health, said the special screening hours are intended to make appointments more convenient.
“It is important that women, beginning at age 40, receive their annual mammogram,”
Fennell said the health system is offering additional appointment times and that all of its mammograms use advanced 3D technology.
According to MyMichigan Health, 3D mammography allows a radiologist to examine breast tissue layer by layer through multiple detailed images. The system compared the process to flipping through the pages of a book.
MyMichigan said the more detailed view can improve the likelihood of finding breast cancer at an earlier stage. The health system also said mammograms can detect cancer when it is more treatable, while early detection may improve survival rates and help some patients avoid more extensive treatment.
MyMichigan Health stated that mammography is the only screening test proven to reduce deaths from breast cancer. The Alpena event is one of several special screening sessions scheduled at MyMichigan medical centers across Michigan during October.
