Alpena residents can see quilts presented to local veterans, enjoy a luncheon and browse quilting displays during a Friendship Day hosted by the Gone to Pieces Quilt Guild of Alpena on Sept. 19.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 167 S. Ripley Blvd. The gathering is open to anyone interested in having lunch, viewing the quilts and attending the veteran presentations.
Quilts of Valor presentation planned
Diane LaBell will speak about the Quilts of Valor program, including how it began and how people can become involved in making quilts for veterans. LaBell has made many Quilts of Valor and will present quilts to some local veterans during the event.
Quilts will be displayed over the pews in the church sanctuary, alongside a display of veterans’ items. The program offers attendees an opportunity to learn more about the guild’s work and the causes supported by its members.
Lunch, vendors and auction included
The event also will feature a chance auction with a quilt, baskets and prizes. Four vendors will sell quilting items.
More than 100 guild members—including beginners, intermediate quilters and professionals—share their talents by making quilts and quilted items for donation to worthy causes. Proceeds from the Friendship Day will help buy batting and quilting supplies so members can continue making quilts to donate.
