Residents can apply for free fuel wood from the City of Alpena at a wood lot on U.S.-23 North, next to Suburban Propane. The city is making the wood available to community members after it was left from the removal of city street trees.
The wood is available for personal use after applicants complete an application. City officials said the offer is intended to make use of the material rather than allow it to deteriorate.
Where to apply in Alpena
Personal-use fuel wood applications are available at Alpena City Hall, the Department of Public Works and the city’s website, www.alpena.mi.us. Applications are available at no cost.
Adjacent homeowners were given the first right of refusal for the wood before the city opened the remaining supply to the broader public.
Pickup details and contact information
The wood lot is being handled on a first-come, first-served basis, so availability may change as residents collect the material. Some pieces that were previously too large to maneuver have been split and reduced into smaller sections to make pickup and transportation easier.
