Target Alpena has chosen Alpena native Andrew Thomson to serve as its new executive director, bringing a longtime community leader back to Northeast Michigan to guide the regional economic-development organization.
Thomson will begin the position on Oct. 5, according to the Target Alpena Board of Directors. He will succeed Mike Mahler, who has been serving as interim executive director.
The board’s decision followed a two-month search that drew 30 applicants. Board President Dennis Werner said the hiring committee unanimously voted to offer Thomson the position and described him as a strong fit for the organization’s next stage.
“I am pleased to announce that our hiring committee voted unanimously to extend an offer to Andrew Thomson as our new executive director,” said Board President Dennis Werner.
Werner said Thomson brings leadership, communication and organizational abilities, along with a strong interest in Northeast Michigan. He also said Thomson is prepared to work with local leaders, residents and other stakeholders as Target Alpena pursues future opportunities.
An Alpena native with community leadership experience
Thomson graduated from Alpena High School and attended Alpena Community College before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Michigan. The organization said he comes from a family with a long history of public service in education and law enforcement.
He spent most of his career in Chelsea, Michigan, in community-focused positions. For 14 years, he served as Adult & Youth Enrichment Coordinator, where he oversaw youth and adult recreation, K-6 sports, early childhood education, summer camps and pool programming.
During that time, Thomson grew the operational budget from $100,000 to $1.2 million. His work also included grant writing, budgeting and program development.
Thomson served as head coach of the Chelsea High School men’s and women’s swim teams. The role involved leading the program and developing relationships with athletes, parents and school administrators.
What Thomson will lead at Target Alpena
The hiring committee was impressed by Thomson’s preparation during the interview process, communication skills and enthusiasm for returning to his hometown, according to Target Alpena.
“Andrew has a very approachable style and a genuine passion for Alpena and Northeast Michigan,” said Werner.
Werner added that Thomson understands the importance of bringing people together, building relationships and creating opportunities—qualities he said will matter as Target Alpena moves forward.
