ALPENA — Sam Bastow scored twice before halftime, leading the Alpena Wildcats to a 2-0 boys varsity soccer victory over Cadillac on Tuesday.
Alpena took control early when Bastow opened the scoring after receiving a pass from Mason Burns. About 10 minutes into the match, Bastow struck again, this time on an assist from Jackson Birmingham.
The two goals gave Alpena a 2-0 advantage at halftime. The Wildcats continued to create opportunities after the break, but Cadillac’s goalkeeper and defense prevented Alpena from adding to its lead.
Defense preserves Alpena shutout
Alpena’s defense held firm as Cadillac produced a pair of late scoring threats. The Wildcats turned both chances away to preserve the shutout, while goalkeeper Jayden Crandall made two saves.
Alpena coach Ken Dragiewicz credited Bastow’s continued development and the team’s defensive performance.
“Glad to see Sam Bastow get a couple goals. He has been progressing all season and his hard work is paying off,” Alpena coach Ken Dragiewicz said.
“Our offense had several additional scoring chances, but we were unable to find the back of the net. Our defense had another solid game, especially in the second half, and we were able to get the shutout,” Dragiewicz said.
Wildcats host three teams Saturday
Alpena is scheduled to host Grayling, Traverse City St. Francis and Cheboygan on Saturday. The source did not provide match times or additional scheduling details.
