Alpena High School junior Xander Allen continued his strong cross-country season Saturday by winning the boys race at the Petoskey Kiwanis Invitational for the second straight week.
Allen completed the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 1 second and led from start to finish. His result gave Alpena an individual winner, but the Wildcats faced a strong team challenge from the host school.
Werth places third for Alpena
Alpena teammate Brendan Werth finished third overall, beating all but one Petoskey runner. A group of four Northmen runners then finished ahead of the rest of Alpena’s lineup, securing the team victory for Petoskey.
Schultz leads Alpena girls
Marian of Bloomfield Hills won the girls race, finishing ahead of Petoskey and Alpena. Freshman Hailey Schultz was Alpena’s first finisher with a time of 22:38.5.
Other Alpena girls runners included Ava Karsten, who finished in 23:10.5; Abby Misiak, 23:54.3; Lila Scott, 24:25.5; Madison Srebnik, 25:00.5; and Clara Belle Orban, 26:10.6.
Several Wildcats recorded season-best or career-best times at the invitational. Alpena’s next meet is scheduled for Saturday at the Shepherd Blue Jay Invitational.
