Alpena Public Schools voters will have a chance to speak directly with school board candidates during a new public forum on Sept. 23. The event will run from 6 to 8 p.m. in the 1st Presbyterian Church Social Room at US 23 North and Long Rapids Road.
Hosted by the League of Women Voters of Northeast Michigan, the free event is designed to give residents more direct access to the people seeking seats on the Alpena Public Schools Board of Education.
How the candidate event will work
Rather than using a traditional single-stage forum, the event will use a “speed-dating” style format. Candidates will rotate from table to table, allowing attendees to have face-to-face conversations, ask questions and discuss the priorities they want school leaders to address.
The format, titled “Candidating,” is intended to create informal, meaningful conversations between voters and candidates who are seeking to lead the district for the next four years.
“This event gives you the opportunity to ask questions of those seeking to lead APS,” said Kathy Bower, President of LWVNEMI.
“It's designed to foster meaningful, direct communication between voters and candidates in a comfortable, informal setting.”
Free and open to the public
The League of Women Voters of Northeast Michigan is a nonprofit organization focused on empowering voters and defending democracy. Organizers encourage all members of the public to attend, learn more about the candidates and prepare for the upcoming election.
Admission is free, and attendees do not need to register in advance.
